미국의 영향이 워낙 거대하다 보미 많은 단어가 영어로 부터 수입이 된 단어가 꽤 있는데요. 영어단어도 중국으로 부터 영향을 받은 단어가 꽤 있는 것 같습니다. 오래전 대항시시대 시절수입된 단어들이라 중국 본토 보다는 남부 지방인 광둥어 위주로 수입이 되었나 봅니다. 이 기사에 소개 된 다른 단어들 보다 케챱이 충격이네요. 무엇보다 케챱의 주재료가 토마토가 아니었답니다. DailyNew 본문에서는 알려주지 않길래 좀 찾아 봤습니다. 내셔널지오 그래픽에서 캐챱의 기원에 대해서 적은 기사가 있네요. 거기서는 원래 버섯으로 만든 다크한 케챱이 주류였고 이후 미국에서 화학물질로 만든 해로운 케챱이 유통 되었답니다. 이 후 그 유명한 헤인즈에서 토마토로 만튼 상용 케챱을 유통했다네요.. 해당 기사 링크도 같이 걸어 둡니다.  나중에 한번 번역해봐야겠어요.

Some Very 'American' Words Come from Chinese

중국으로부터 온 희귀 영어 단어들 

Many of the Chinese words that are now part of English were borrowed long ago. These loanwords are most often from Cantonese or other Chinese languages rather than Mandarin.

몇몇 영어 단어들은 아주오래전 많은 중국단어들로 부터 유래 되었습니다. 이 차용어들은  표준중국어 보다는 주로 광둥어나 다른 중국언어들로부터 유래되었습니다.

Kowtow - The English word kowtow is a verb that means to agree too easily to do what someone else wants you to do, or to obey someone with power in a way that seems weak.

Kowtow - 영어 단어 Kowtow 는 누군가에게 매우 쉽게 동의 하거나, 누군가 원하는것을 쉽게 해주거나, 누군가의 힘에 약한척하며 굴복하다라는 뜻의 동사입니다. 

It comes from the Cantonese word kau tau, which means “knock your head.” It refers to the act of kneeling and lowering one’s head as a sign of respect to superiors – such as emperors, elders and leaders. In the case of emperors, the act required the person to touch their head to the ground.

이 단어는 "머리를 조아리다"는 뜻의 광둥어 叩頭(kau tau)로 부터 유래 되었습니다. 군주나 수장에게 무릎을 꿇고 경의를 표하며 머리를 숙이는 동작에서 유래 되었습니다. 황제국에서는 머리를 땅에 닿는 동작이 요구 되었습니다. 

Kumquat - A kumquat is a fruit that looks like a small orange. It is native to South Asia and the Asia-Pacific.

Kumquat - 작은 오렌지같은 과일입니다. 동남아시아, 남태평양이 원산지입니다.

The word comes from the Cantonese word kam-kwat or gām-gwāt, meaning “golden orange.” Gām means “golden” and gwāt means “citrus fruit” or “orange.” The word also refers to the plant that carries this fruit.

이 단어도 광둥어 金橘 (kam-kwat 또는 gām-gwāt) 에서 유래 되었고, 금 귤이라는 뜻입니다. Gām 은 금이라는 뜻이고 gwāt 는 레몬과 과일이나 오렌지를 뜻합니다. 혹은 열매를 맺는 과일라는 뜻 도 있습니다. 

Chow - Another food-related word from Chinese is chow. The English word chow is slang for “food.” American English speakers also use the phrasal verb “chow down,” which can mean to eat something quickly and without good manners.

It comes from the Cantonese verb ch’ao, which means “to stir-fry” or “to cook.”

Chow - 중국으로부터 유래된 또 음식의 또 다른 이름은 chow 입니다. 영어단어로 chow는 슬랭으로 음식입니다. 미국영어에서는 구동사로  “chow down” 으로 사용합니다.  뜻은 식사예절 없이 매우 빨리 먹어 치우는것을 뜻 합니다. 

이 단어 역시 광둥어  ch’ao 에서 유래하였으며 ‘볶다’, 요리하다’ 라는 뜻이 있습니다.

Ketchup - Most Americans would have a hard time believing that ketchup was not created in the United States. Nevertheless, it is America’s most popular condiment. The story of ketchup began more than 500 years ago in Southeast Asia. And, historians say, the sauce was probably first created in a Chinese community in northern Vietnam. Later, this sauce would reach Indonesia and be called kecap.

많은 미국인들은 캐챱이 미국에서 만들어지지 않았다는 사실을 믿기 어려울 것 입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 케챱은 미국에서 가장 인기있는 소스입니다. 케챱의 기원은 500년전 동남아시아로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 그리고 역사학자들은 이 소스가 베트남 북부의 중국인사회에서 만들어졌을것이라고 추측합니다. 그리고 디 소스는 인도네시아로 건너갔고 케챱이라고 불리게 되었습니다.  

The word first met the English language in the late 17th century, when a British colony in Indonesia came into contact with this sauce. Later, English settlers brought ketchup with them to the American colonies, but the condiment did not contain tomatoes until the mid-19th century.

이 단어가 처음 영어단어가 된 것은 17세기 후반입니다. 인도네시아가 대영제국의 식민지였을 때 처음 이 소스를 접했습니다. 그리고 영국 정착자들은 케챱을 미국의 식민지로 가지고 왔습니다. 하지만 이 향신로는 19세기 중반까지도 토마토가 주원료가 아니었습니다.
