버스보이들과 시인들 : 레스토랑 이상의 그 무엇.

한 때 유행했던 민들레영토라는 곳이 단순히 레스토랑이 아닌 문화적인 공간이었는데 손님들끼리 서로 알아가는 공간은 아니었죠. 지금은 많이 없어진걸로 알고있는데 여기 소개되는 미국의 '버스보이들과 시인들'은 그 부분에 미국식 사교문화를 더 한것 같네요. 저도 그렇지만 우리나라를 포함 아시아쪽 사람들은 낮선사람들을 부끄부끄 하는데 서양인들은 보면 항상 쿨하더라고요.

Iraqi-American Andy Shallal had planned on becoming a doctor, but he left medical school after realizing that he wanted to do something else with his life.

이라크 출신 미국인 앤디 샤랄은 의사기 될 계획을 가지고있었습니다. 하지만 그는 그가 진정으로 원하는것은 무언가 다른것이라는것을 깨닫고 학교를 그만두었습니다. 

“It could have been a very bad decision ... but it ended up to be a good decision,” he says.

"그것은 나쁜 결정이 될수도 있었지만 ...결국에는 좋은 결정이 되었죠." 그는 말했습니다.

In 2005, he opened Busboys and Poets - a unique restaurant, bookstore, theatre, and community gathering place in Washington D.C. The name refers to American poet Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy before he gained recognition as a poet.

2005년 그는 '버스보이들과 시인들' 이라는 매우 특별한 레스토랑, 북스토어, 극장 그리고 사교모입장소를 워싱턴D.C에 열었습니다. 이 이름은 미국 시인 랭스턴 휴고에게서 영감을 받은 것입니다. 랭스턴 휴고는 시인으로 명성을 얻기전까지는 버스보이로 일을했습니다.

Shallal describes Busboys and Poets as "a place to feed your mind, body and soul ... a space for art, culture and politics to collide. We believe that by creating such a space we can inspire social change and begin to transform our community and the world."

샤랄은 '버스보이들과 시인들'을 마음과 몸과 그리고 영혼에 양식을 주는 공간이라고 묘사합니다. 예술을 위한공간, 문화와 정치 모든것이 함께 옵니다. 우리는 이런 창조적 공간을 만들어 냄으로써,  우리의 사회와 세계를 바꾸고 변화를 시작할수 있다고 믿습니다.

Busboys And Poets hosts a number of poetry nights and speaking events, including an ongoing discussion series called "A Continuing Talk on Race". According to Shallal, the goal is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, and perhaps most importantly, inspired. 

'버스보이들과 시인들은' 많은 시의 밤과 발표 이벤트를 개최했습니다. 아직도 진행되는 시리즈인 "A Continuing Talk on Race"를 포함해서 말이죠. 샤랄에 따르면, 사람들이 토론을 통해서 도전적이고, 교육적이고 어렵지만 중요한 영감을 느끼는것이 목표라고 했습니다. 

It should come as no surprise that Shallal loves going to work every day. "It's a great space to be in. I don't have to leave an office to come to eat. This is my office and this is my space. It's where people come to connect and meet,” he says.

이런 점은 샤랄이 매일 일터로 가는 것을 놀랍지않게 합니다. " 안에 머물기 최적의 장소입니다. 커피나 밥을 먹기 휘애 떠날 필요가 없습니다. 여기가 저의 공간이고 사무실입니다. 사람들을 만나고 연결시키는 장소입니다." 그는 말했습니다.

Busboys and Poets has been visited by many well-known customers over the years, including Anthony Bourdain, Naomi Klein, Larry King, and Moby.

'버스보이들과 시인들'은 몇해동안 많은 유명한 인사들을 손님으로 맞아 들였습니다. Anthony Bourdain, Naomi Klein, Larry King 그리고 Moby를 포함해서 말이죠.
