Trump: Trade Wars Are Good, Easy to Win

철강관세 관련 사건은 포털뉴스 헤드라인에서만 보고 그다지 관심 가지지 않았는데. 이거 꽤나 또라이 짓이라고 할 수 있네요. 미국인들이야 상대적으로 부당하다고 느낄 수있지만 미국이 가지고있는 세계 경제 균형을 생각해야죠. 이것이 트럼프가 지지기반을 공고히 하기 위한 쇼 일수도 있습니다. 하지만 게리 콘 NEC위원장 마저 사퇴 해버린 마당에 쇼라고 보긴 어렵습니다.  스스로 사면초가의 입지를 만들지는 말아야죠. 슈퍼 천재이거나 슈퍼 또라이거나.  미국인 무언가 급진적인 조치를 취하면 세계 경제는 출렁하게 되어있습니다. 워낙에 미국에 의존하는 국가가 많으니까요. 하아.. 걱정입니다. 곧 미국하고 북한 비핵화 관련 정상회담도 해야하는데 말이 잘 통해야 할 텐데요. 특히 트럼프는 한반도의 평화를 바라지 않을테니까요..

Trump: Trade Wars Are Good, Easy to Win

President Donald Trump is defending his plan to raise taxes on steel and aluminum imports entering the United States. Trump declared on Friday that “trade wars are good, and easy to win” -- a claim that some Americans were quick to criticize.

도널드 트럼프 대통령은 철강과 알루미늄 수입에 대해 관세를 인상 하기로 한 그의 계획을 고수 했습니다. 트럼프는 금요일 “무무역전쟁은 좋은것이고 이기기 쉬운것” 이라고 선언했습니다. 미국시민 일부는 이 요구를 빠르게 비판 했습니다.  

Trump has said that the U.S. government would set punishing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Such a move would increase tensions with China and other countries.They also would raise the possibility of higher prices for American businesses and consumers.

트럽프는 미국정부가 철강과 알루미늄 수입에 대한 관세가 벌금을 부과 할 것 이라고 밝혔습니다. 이러한 조치는 중국을 비롯한 다른 나라들과의 긴장을 증가 시킬수있습니다. 그들 역시 미국과의 사업과 소비에 대해 세금을 인상 시킬가능성이 있습니다. 

Early Friday, Trump tweeted: “Our steel industry is in bad shape. IF YOU DON’T HAVE STEEL, YOU DON’T HAVE A COUNTRY!”

지난 금요일 트럼프는 “우리의 철강 산업은 일그러져 있습니다. 철강이 없다면 나라도 없습니다” 라고 트위터에 올렸습니다.

The president asked heads of aluminum and steel companies to the White House Thursday. He announced plans to set tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum imports next week.

지난 목요일 백악관에서 대통령은 철강회사와 알루미늄 회사의 사장들에게 질문했습니다. 그는 수입철강에게 25% 그리고 알루미늄에게는 10%의 다음주까지 세금을 부과하겠다 발표했습니다. 

Trump’s plan led to criticism from the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker. He rejected the plan as a clear intervention to protect U.S. domestic industry. Juncker said the EU would take steps to punish the U.S. if Trump followed through.

트럼프의 계획은 유럽집행위원장 쟌클루드전커부터  비판을 받았습니다. 그는 이 조치는 미국국내산업 보호을 위한 명확한 계획이기에 거부 했습니다. 전커는 트럼프가 계속 고수한다면 EU역시 미국에 벌금을 부과 할 수 있음을 밝혔습니다. 

China’s Commerce Ministry said it was seriously concerned about Trump’s plan. The ministry said China has satisfied its trade agreements and appealed to the U.S. government to settle disputes through negotiation.

중국의 통상무역장관은 트럼프의 계획에 상당한 우려가 있음을 표명했습니다. 장관은 중국은 미국과의 무역협정에 만족하고 있었다고 했습니다. 그리고 미국 정부에게 협상을 통해 이 문제를 해결하기를 요구 했습니다.

China has received many complaints from the United States, Europe and other trading partners. They accuse the Chinese government of unfairly supporting Chinese exports and restricting the Chinese market in violation of its free-trade promises.

중국은 미국을 비롯해 유럽과 다른 나라들로 부터 많은 비난을 받아왔습니다. 그들은 중국의 불공정 수출정책과 자유 무역협정을 방해하는 중국시장의 제약에 대해서 비난했습니다. 

Critics warned Trump’s tariffs may lead to a trade war. They suggested other countries will take action to punish the United States or use national security as a reason to set their own trade rules.

비판가들은 트럼프에게 이 관세정책은 무역전쟁을 야기할 수 있음을 경고했습니다. 그들은 다른 국가들에게 미국에게 합당한 조치를 취할거나 국가안보를 이유로 무역규정을 지킬것을 요구 했습니다.  

Trump’s move will possibly raise steel and aluminum prices in the U.S. That is good news for American companies, but bad for companies that use the metals, such as manufacturers of beer and air conditioning equipment.

트럼프의 움직임은 미국내 철강과 알루미늄의 가격상승을 가져올 가능성이 있습니다. 이것은 미국내 회사들에게 좋은 소식이지만 원자재를 사용하는 맥주공장이나 에어컨공장같은 경우에는 나쁜 뉴스 입니다. 

Wendy Cutler, a former U.S. trade official, noted “What benefits one industry can hurt another. What saves one job can jeopardize another.”

미국 전 무역 사무관 웬디 클루터는 “우리의 산업의 혜택이 또 다른 산업을 위태롭게 할 수 있습니다. 하나의 직업이 구할 수 있는것은 다른 위태로운 직업도 구할수 있습니다.”  라고 말했습니다.
