국내에서도 인기휴양지인 보라카이 섬이 일년동안 폐쇄한다고 합니다. 환상의 바다를 자랑했던 보라카이섬이 과잉여행객들과 수처리 없이 내보내지는 폐수때문에 썩은내가 진동하는 섬이 되었다고하네요. 자연은 그대로 두면 스스로 정화하는 기능이 있으니 1년뒤면 다시 깨끗하게 변한 보라카이 섬이 될 것이라 기대합니다. 그리고 그 동안 연간 방문객숫자 제한과 리조트들의 정화시설 설비들을 의무화 했으면 좋겠네요. 개인적으로는 두테르테 대통령의 이번 결정은 잘한 결정이라고 생각합니다.!

Philippines Likely to Shut down Popular Boracay Island

필리핀, 인기휴양지 보라카이섬을 당분간 폐쇄

The possible closure of a major coastal tourism magnet in the Philippines for environmental cleanup will hurt business, but for a cause that helps everyone longer term, experts say.

환경개선을 위한 필리핀의 주요관광지에 대한 잠정 폐쇄는 비즈니스에 타격을 줄 수 있지만 장기적으로는 더욱 도움을 줄것이라고 전문가들을 말합니다. 

President Rodrigo Duterte said via the presidential website in March he would place Boracay Island under a “state of calamity.” The island may be shut down for two to 12 months, Philippine media reports say.

로드리고 두테르테 대통령은 지난 3월 공식 웹사이트에서 보라카이섬을 ‘재난의 상태’로 명명한다고 했습니다. 이 섬은 약 12개월간 폐쇄됩니다.

Boracay, a 10.3-square-kilometer feature in the central Philippines, has been compared to Bali and other Asian beach resort hot spots. Its main white sand beach runs four kilometers, paralleled by a strip of at least 100 hotels.

“The Philippines has been very aggressive in its campaign to attract tourists, and Boracay is actually the number one selling point of the tourism business in the Philippines,” said Maria Ela Atienza, political science professor at University of the Philippines Diliman.

The island has a capacity of about half a million tourists per year, compared to its 2017 total of 2 million.

Alicia Lustica, head of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said that the island's "carrying capacity" should be reevaluated. “We need also to assess the volume of waste that has been generated and likewise how people are doing their activities on Boracay Island,” Lustica said in the video.

Sewage has become an issue because some resorts do not treat their own properly or dump it into the sea, according to a local news website. The site mentions overbuilding and poor infrastructure as additional problems.

A temporary closure would let Boracay clean itself up to become better for tourists, said Jonathan Ravelas, Chief Market Strategist with BDO Unibank in Manila.

잠정 폐쇄는 보라카이섬을 스스로 정화할 수 있게 할것이며 보다 나은 여행지가 될것입니다. 마닐라 유니뱅크의 수석 마켓전략가 조나단 리베일라는 전했습니다.

Travelers would rather see a cleaner island, he added. Today, Boracay-bound tourists must pay an environmental impact fee before stepping onto the island.

여행객들은 보다 깨끗한 섬을 보기를 원합니다. 지금은 보라카이섬에 발을 들이는 여행객들은 반드시 환경세를 입국전에 부과해야합니다. 

A cleaner Boracay would motivate other Philippine beach resort areas to protect their environments before they too face shutdown, Ravelas said.

깨끗한 보라카이 섬은 필리핀의 다른 해안 리조트에게도 스스로 환경보호에 대한 동기부여를 할 것 입니다. 그들 역시 잠정폐쇄를 당하기 전에 말이죠. 리베일라는 이와 같이 말했습니다.
