People learning a second language might have heard of the expression “false friend.” This term is used to describe words in different languages that look alike, but have different meanings. Today, we will look at a few examples of false friends in two languages: English and French.

두번째 언어를 배우는 사람들은 아마 "거짓친구(false friend)."라는 표현을 들어 보았을 것입니다. 이 표현은 어떤 단어를 설명할때, 다른언어에서 같은 보이지만 서로 다른 뜻을 가진 단어를 설명할때 사용합니다. 오늘날 우리는 영어와 프랑스어 사이에서 많은 거짓친구들의 예를 볼수있습니다.  

You may be surprised to learn that English gets 30 to 45 percent of its words from French. The reason goes back to the year 1066, when Norman forces invaded what is now Britain. The Normans were from northern France and spoke French. Over time, the two languages combined and shared words. Some researchers believe that about 10,000 French words entered the English language. 

당신은 아마 영어의 30~45정도의 단어가 프랑스어에서 왔다는 사실에 놀랄수도 있습니다. 이 이유는 르만이 지금 브리튼이라는 불리는 지역을 침략한 1066년으로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 노르만은 프랑스의 북부 지역사람들이고 프랑스어를 사용했습니다. 시간이 흘러, 두 언어는 합쳐지고 많은 단어를 공유했습니다. 몇몇 연구자들은 약 10,000정도의 프랑스 단어가 영어로 유입이 되었다고 추정합니다. 

However, although English took many French words, their meanings have not always stayed the same.

하지만, 영어가 수많은 프랑스단어를 사용할지라도, 그 단어의 뜻이 계속 같은 뜻으로 남아 있지는 않습니다. 

Take, for example, the French word collège. In English, college can often be used in place of the word university. However, in French, collège actually means “middle school,” or the level of schooling for students in grades five or six through eight.

예시로 프랑스 단어 collège 를 봅시다. 영어에서 college 는 대학이라는 의미로 사용되는 단어입니다. 하지만 프랑스어에서의 collège 의 실제 뜻은 "중학교" 라는 뜻입니다. 또는 8학년에서 5~6학년정도의 학생을 뜻합니다. 

There are many other similar words in the two languages with completely different meanings.

두 언어에서는 비슷해보이지만 완전히 다른뜻을 가진 수많은 단어들이 있습니다.

In English, the word chat is a verb which means “to talk casually;” but in French, the word chat is the word for an animal: a cat.

영어에서 chat 은 가볍게 이야기하다라는 뜻의 동사입니다. 하지만 프랑스어에서의 chat은 고양이라는 뜻입니다. 

If an English speaker says someone is jolly, that means they are cheerful or friendly. But in French, jolie means someone is good-looking or pleasant to look at.

영어사용자가 누구에게 jolly 라고 말하면, 그뜻은 힘내 혹은 친근한 이라는 뜻입니다. 하지만 프랑스어에서 jolie 는 좋아 보인다. 혹은 즐거워 보인다 라는 뜻입니다.

There are many more false friends in French, but these are some of the most common ones. However, if you speak French, and are planning on traveling to an English–speaking country, it might be a good idea to study these before you go!
