Japanese Artist Parodies History with "Samurai Surrealism"

일본 아티스트의 초현실주의 사무라이패러디. 

There's an image that's been shared on social media dozens of times over the past few years. The image depicts a shoeless samurai walking a cat wearing armor. The samurai has a helmet with cat ears, and the image appears to be very old, perhaps dating back to Medieval Japan.

지난 몇년간 소셜미디어에 수차례 공유된 한 이미지가 있습니다. 이 이미지는 맨발의 사무라이가 갑옷을 입고 고양이와 산책을 하고있는 모습을 그렸습니다. 사무라이의 헬멧은 고양이 귀모양이며 매우 오래된 그림처럼 보입니다. 아마 중세일본으로 돌아간 것 같습니다. 

In reality, the painting is the creation of Japanese artist Tetsuya Noguchi, who often depicts samurai in unusual, comic situations. He has also mastered traditional techniques to create highly-detailed armor that would not be out of place in a museum.

사실, 이 그림은 일본인 작가 테츠야 노구치의 창작품입니다. 그는 사무라이를 종종 일반적이지않고, 만화같은 상황으로 그립니다.  그는 상당히 정교한 전통 갑옷제작 - 보통은 박물관 밖으로 나가지 않을 - 의 마스터입니다. 

Writing for web magazine artscape Japan, which covers Japan's art scene, Alan Gleason calls the style “samurai surrealism”.

He says that every few years an artist becomes popular with "pictures of hamburger-[eating] geishas and the like." While these images are fun at first, he adds, they become predictable.

This genre's best artists are popular not because of the obvious parody, but because they have mastered the classical art form used to set it up. Once in a while, he adds, an artist's technique is so incredible that their work becomes more than simple parody.

"Tetsuya Noguchi's work is just such an example," Gleason says.

Other works by the Tokyo-based artist include a lifelike sculpture of a samurai wearing ladybug-styled armor and a painting of a warrior going into battle on a bicycle.

도쿄에 기반을 있는 다른 아티스트들의 작업의 경우에는 레이디버그 스타일갑옷을 입은 사무라이의 조각이나 자전거를 타고 전투에 나서는 전사의 그림 같은것이 있습니다. 

Besides frequently popping up on Twitter, Noguchi's work is regularly shown in Japan.His exhibition ‘From Medieval With Love‘ is currently on display at the Pola Museum Annex in Ginza, Tokyo.

트위터에 자주 나타나는것 뿐만아니라, 노구치의 작품은 일본에서 정기적으로 전시가 됩니다. 그의 전시회 "사랑과함께 중세로부터" 는 현재 도쿄, 긴자의 폴라 뮤지엄 아넥스에서 전시 중입니다.
