저는 매일 아침에  'Engoo' 라는 온라인 회화 클래스를 통해서 25분간 영어 수업을 합니다. 다양한 국적의 선생님들과 스카이프를 통해 수업을 하는데 저는 DailyNews라는 학습자료을 통해 수업을 합니다. 그날그날 뉴스를 통해서 수업하는것인데요. 그 날 했던  수업내용을 제가 수업이 끝나면 스스로 번역해서 올려 놓을려고 합니다. 저에게는 복습하는 의미도 있고 스스로 번역을 통해서 애매한 문장을 집요하게 분해하는 능력도 쌓을겸해서 말이죠. 번역할때 너무 영어식 문장표현은 좀 의역을 해서 한국스럽게 고쳐야겠죠.

새해의 행운의 음식들.

The Lunar New Year is one of the biggest and most important holidays in Asia.

새해는 아시아 국가에서 가장큰 명절 중에 하나 입니다. 

In China, it is called “chun jie.” In Vietnam, it is known as “Tet.” And in Korea, it is “Seollal.”

중국에서는 새해는 “춘절”로 불리고, 베트남에서는 “뗏” 으로 알려져있습니다. 그리고 한국에서는 “설날”입니다.

While the names may be different, these and other countries mark the coming year with family reunions, festivals, cleaning and organizing the home, the color red, and traditional foods.

불리는 이름은 다르지만 이 나라들의 새해는 가족들이 모이고, 축제, 집단정, 붉은색, 전통음식들로 기억됩니다. 

Very popular in China, spring rolls are a common New Year’s food.

중국에서는 춘절음식으로 스프링롤이 매우 인기있습니다.  

Fried spring rolls are said to look like large pieces of gold. The food is a symbol of wealth and financial success for the coming year.

튀긴 스프링롤은 큰 금덩이와 비슷하다고 여겨집니다. 그 음식은 다가오는 새해의 부와 성공을 의미 합니다. 

In Vietnam, one food you will find during Tet is orange-red sticky rice. The special dish is called xoi-gac. It is made with gac, a fruit that only grows in Asia. In English, it is known as baby jackfruit.

베트남의 설날 ‘뗏’에서는 주황색의 붉은빛 쌀 음식을 볼수있습니다.이 특별한 음식은 “쇼이각” 이라고 불립니다.  ‘Gac’이라는 아시아에서만 자라는 과일로 만들어집니다. 서양에서는 ‘Baby Jackfruit’ 으로 알려져있습니다. 

No Korean New Year celebration is complete without tteokguk, or rice cake soup.

설날에 떡국을 먹지 않으면 한국인에게는 설날이라고 할 수 없습니다. 

Eating a bowl of it is said to bring a person a long life. Eating tteokhuk also represents growing another year older. Koreans may ask a person their age by saying “how many bowls of tteokguk have you eaten?”

한그릇의 떡국을 먹는것은 장수를 할 수 있다고 여겨집니다. 그리고 떡국을 먹는 것은 한살을 더먹는것과 같습니다. 한국사람들은 나이를 물을때 “떡국 몇그릇 먹었어?” 라고 묻기도 합니다. 

People in Taiwan celebrate the New Year with radish cake. This is because, in the Hoklo language spoken in Taiwan, the words for “radish” and “good fortune” are homophones.

대만사람들은 무로만든 케익과 함께 새해를 축복합니다. 그 이유는 대만전통어’Hoklo' 에서, 단어 ‘무’와 ‘행운’이 같은 발음이기 때문입니다. 

In many places in Asia, fish is another lucky food for the New Year because it symbolizes wealth.

많은 아시아 국가에서, 물고기는 또다른 새해의 복을 상징하는 음식입니다. 왜냐하면 물고기는 부를 상징하기 때문이죠.
