New technology is making it possible for people to make realistic videos of people appearing to say things they never actually said.

새로운 기술은 사람들이 실제로 하지 않은 말을 실제로 한것처럼 비디오를 만드는 기술이 가능하게 되었습니다. 

The videos are known as “deepfakes.” The name comes from the process of deep learning, a form of artificial intelligence, or AI.

"딥페이크" 비디오라 불리는 이 기술의 이름은 인공지능 AI를 구성하는 딥러닝 프로세스에서 왔습니다.

Officials and media experts have expressed concern about deepfakes. They warn the videos could be used to threaten America’s national security or interfere in elections.

공식 미디어 전문가들은 딥페이크 기술에 관해서 우려를 표했습니다. 그들은 이 디비오들이 미국의 안보위협이나 정치에 간섭하는데 사용할수있을 것이라고 경고 했습니다.

The videos are created by putting a complex set of instructions into a computer, along with lots of images and audio recordings. The computer program then learns how to copy the person’s facial expressions, movements, voice and speaking patterns.

이 비디오는 컴퓨터에 이미지와 오디오를 포함안 몇가지 복잡한 세트의 지침을 입력하면 만들어집니다. 이 컴퓨터 프로그램은 입력된 사람의 표정이나 행당 그리고 목소리와 말하는 패턴등을 복제합니다. 

Experts say, with enough video and audio of a person, the system can produce fake video of the person saying anything.

전문가는, 특정인의 충분한 양의 비디오와 오디오가 있다면, 이 시스템은 이 사람이 말하는 페이크 비디오를 만들수있습니다. 

The issue got attention earlier this year when the website BuzzFeed published a deepfake political video. The video appeared to show former President Barack Obama criticizing President Donald Trump.

이 이슈는 올해 초 웹사이트 버즈피드에서 딥페이크 정치비디오를 공개하면서 주목을 받았습니다. 이 비디오는 버락오마바 전 대통령이 트럼프 대통령을 비난하는 모습을 담고 있습니다. 

Hany Farid, a digital expert, thinks it's possible that deepfakes will be used to try to interfere with American politics.

디지털 전문가인 헨리 페리드는 딥페이크 비디오는 미국정치에 영향을 주기위해 사용 될 수 있을 것이라는 생각을 했습니다. 

“We have entered a new world where it is going to be difficult to know how to believe what we see,” he told the Associated Press.

"우리는 우리가 본것들을 믿기 어려운 새로운 세상에 들어섰습니다." 그는 관련기자들에게 이와 같이 말했습니다. 

He added that the opposite result is also worrying. People will become so used to seeing false videos that they will be more likely to doubt a real video. Farid expects the problem to spread worldwide.

그는 반대 결과 역시 걱정된다고 덧붙였습니다. 사람들은 이 가짜비디오를 보게 될것이고 나중에는 진짜 비디오를 의심하게 될지도 모른다고 했습니다. 페리드는 이 문제가 전세계로 퍼질것이라고 예상했습니다.
