어린이와 성인의 언어학습자를 비교해보다!

It’s well-known that children find it easier than adults to learn new languages. But are there any advantages to learning as an adult?

어린이들이 성인보다 새로운 언어를 쉽게 배운다는 것은 잘 알려져있습니다. 하지만 성인이 되어서 언어를 배우는것에 대한 장점은 없는 것 인가요? 

Until recently, language learning experts thought that children needed to be exposed to language within the first 2 to 5 years of life in order to become completely fluent.However, a recent study from Boston College, Harvard, and MIT suggests that the so-called “critical period” is much later than this.

최근까지, 언어학습의 전문가들은 어린이들은 유창해지기까지 태어난 후 해당언어에  2살에서 5살시기에 노출 시키는것이 필요하다고 생각했습니다. 하지만 최근 보스턴,하버드 그리고 MIT대학교에서는 제안하는 "중요한 기간"은 이것보다 훨신 늦다고 합니다. 

The team of researchers looked at data from about 670,000 native and non-native English speakers, and found that the best time to learn a foreign language is before 17.4 years of age.

연구팀은 약 67만명의 원어민,비원어민 영어습득자에 대한 데이터를 조사한결과, 외국어를 배우는 가장 최적의 시기는 17.4살 이전이라고 합니다. 

However, it’s still possible to become fluent as an adult. Unlike children, adults usually have an important reason for learning a foreign language: either for work, study, or social purposes. This can motivate them when the learning process becomes difficult.

하지만, 성인이 되어서도 유창해지는것은 여전히 가능합니다. 아이들과는 다르게, 성인은 외국어를 배워야하는 중요한 이유가 대개는 있습니다. : 직장, 공부 그리고 사회적 목적으로 존재합니다. 언어를 배우는 과정이 힘들때 이런한것들이 동기부여가 됩니다.  

The study found that adults who learned by immersion – living in an English-speaking country more than 90 percent of the time – were twice as likely to become fluent, compared to classroom learners.

연구에서는 몰입해서 언어를 배우는 사람들이 - 영어권국가에서 사는 사람들이 90%이상이 - 교육기관에서 배우는 사람들에비해 두배 이상 유창해졌다고 합니다. 

Moreover, adults learned more quickly in immersion environments than children. This may be because adult speakers can notice other elements of language, such as cultural expressions and non-verbal communication, and use that information to improve their understanding.

게다가, 성인학습자들은 아이들에 비해 빠르게 환경에 몰입합니다. 아마 성인학습자들은 언어의 다른 요소들 쉽게 눈치 채기 때문일것입니다. 가령 문화적 표현, 비언어적 소통등을 이용한 정보는 그들의 이해를 향상시킵니다. 

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that each language learner is different.Regardless of age or experience, everyone learns in a unique way. For this reason, it is helpful to understand your strengths and weaknesses in order to become a more proficient speaker.

아마 가장 중요한 것은 언어를 배운 사람 모두 각자가 다르다는것을 기억하는 것입니다. 나이나 경험에 상관없이, 모두 각자의 특별한 방식으로 배웁니다. 이러한 이유로, 보다 전문적인 스피커가 되려면 당신의 강점과 약점을 이해하는것이 중요합니다.
