Have you ever thought about why Americans write color and meter, while the British write colour and metre?

영국인들이colour 또는  metre로 쓸때 왜 미국인들은  color 와 meter로 쓰는지에 대해서 생각해본적이 있나요?

These spelling differences – and many others – go back more than 200 years, to when the first English dictionaries were written.

이 스펠링의 차이는 -이것말고도 더욱 많이 - 처음 영어사전이 만들어진 200년 전으로 거슬러 올라갑니다.

Before the Internet, if you wanted to know how to spell a word you had to look it up in a dictionary. The first modern English dictionary was Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1755. It was the standard for English spelling until about 50 years later, when an American teacher named Noah Webster Jr. began writing his own dictionary.

인터넷이전에는, 어떤 단어의 철자를 알기위해서는 사전을 찾아봐야만했습니다. 첫번째 현대 영어 사전은 1755년 쓰여진 사뮤엘 존슨의  Dictionary of the English Language 였습니다. 이것은 미국의 교수인 노아 웹스터 주니어가 그의 사전을 쓰기 전까지 약 50년간 영어 철자의 표준이었습니다.

Webster lived during the American Revolutionary War, when the U.S. fought for independence from Great Britain. After the U.S. became its own country, Webster argued that Americans should have their own language: “American English.”

웹스터는 미국이 영국으로 부터 독립하기위해서 싸웠던 혁명전쟁기간에 살았습니다. 그리고 웹스터는 미국이 그들만의 언어인 미국영어를 가져야 한다고 논쟁했습니다. 

So in 1806, Webster wrote the first American English dictionary.

1806년 웹스터는 미국영어사전을 편찬했습니다.

Webster believed that silent letters were unnecessary. Because of this, Webster simplified the spelling of many words, such as  iland (island), nife (knife), and tung(tongue).

웹스터는 묵음철자는 불필요하다고 여겼습니다. 이때문에 웹스터는 많은 영어 철자를 단순화 했습니다. 예를 들면  iland (island), nife (knife), and tung(tongue) 입니다.

While many of his spellings are not used anymore, a few of them, such as honor and organize (originally honour and organise), are now standard in American English.

지금 그의 철자는 대부분 사용되고있지 않지만, 그중 몇몇은,  honor 와 organize (원래는 honour 와 organise) 같은 단어는 미국영어의 표준이 되었습니다. 

The British followed Webster in removing the ‘k’ from words like magic, logic and fabric, but rejected most other changes.

영국은 웹스터식 단어에서 magic, logic 그리고 fabric 과 같이 k를 없에는것을 따랐습니다. 하지만 대부분은 거절 했습니다. 

In 1828, Webster wrote a larger dictionary and called it An American Dictionary of the English Language. It was this dictionary that helped make American English an official language with its own spelling rules.

1828년 웹스터는 An American Dictionary of the English Language 라 불리는 더 큰 사전을 만들었습니다.  이것은 공식적으로 미국영어가 그 만의 철자법칙을 가지도록 도와줬습니다.
