연구 : 영국사람들이 미국사람들보다 치아건강이 좋다.

굳이 뭘또 이런걸 찾아서 알려주나 싶네요. 저는 미국인들의 식생활습관 때문인 줄 알았는데 결국 하고자 하는 이야기는 이빨빠진채 등장하는 많은 영국배우들때문에 영국인들은 치아가 안좋다라는 선입견이 생긴거였습니다. 그것도 무려 3개대학교의 연구진이 같이 연구한결과입니다. 믿어 줘야겠네요. 여튼 이 연구 결과는 미국에게 국민건강보험의 중요성을 알리는 계기가 될수도 있을 것 같습니다. 영국은 보험이 있어서 저소득계층이라도 치과관리를 받을수있고 미국은 그렇지 않다고 하니까요. 좀더 많은걸 입체적으로 봐야겠지만 그 부분이 일정부분 영향을 준다고 도 볼수 있을것 같습니다. 

Study: British Have Better Teeth Than Americans

연구 : 영국사람들이 미국사람들보다 치아건강이 좋다.

Many Americans believe Britons have bad teeth. But a new study shows Americans actually have more dental problems.

많은 미국인들이 영국인들은 치아건강이 나쁘다고 여깁니다. 하지만 새로운 연구에서는 실제로 미국인들이 더욱 나쁜것으로 드러났습니다. 

Researchers from University College London, the National University of Colombia and the Harvard School of Public Health found that among people 25 and older, Americans are missing more teeth.

영국런던대학교, 콜럼비아국립대 그리고 하버드대의 공동연구진들은 25세 이상 성인중 미국인들이 더 많은 치아손실이 있다고 밝혔습니다. 

The researchers also found that people living in poverty in the United States had worse teeth than those in Britain.

연구진들은 미국에서 가난하게 살아가는 사람들이 영국에서보다 치아 건강이 더 나쁘다는 사실을 알렸습니다. 

People in Britain usually receive dental care through the National Health Service, which is funded by taxpayers. In the U.S., people either pay for their dental care or buy dental insurance. Many poor people in the U.S. do not have dental insurance and cannot afford dental care.

영국사람들은 기본적으로 세금으로부터 운용되는 국민건강보험으로부터 치아관리 서비스를 받습니다. 미국에서는 치아관리를 위해 돈을 지불하거나 보험에 가입해야합니다. 미국의 많은 수의 저소득자들은 치아보험이 없거나 가입할 능력이 되지 않습니다. 

In 2004, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found that Britain had the lowest number of people with decayed, missing or filled teeth from among all of its 34 member states. The United States was in the middle of the rankings.

2004년 국제협력기구(OECD)는 영국은 34개의 가입국가중에서 가장 낮은수의 충치와 치주질환율을 기록했습니다. 미국은 중간정도 순위를 기록했습니다.

So where does the stereotype of Britons having bad teeth come from? 

그럼 이런 선입견은 어디서 온 것일까요??

According to Ben Atkins of the Oral Health foundation, the myth likely started with the rise of Hollywood movie stars in the 1920's. "If you look, a lot of the British stars of that era had missing teeth. All this was seized upon by the marketing industry, where you can usually trace these modern myths to," Atkins said.
